Roger Federer really popularized playing with a hybrid of natural gut main strings and polyester cross strings. But we all know that natural gut can be extremely expensive. On top of that, he used Luxilon ALU Power Rough for the crosses. That string is famously expensive, stiff and loses tension extremely quickly. For the rest of us muggles, we’ll just have to settle for something else. If you’re looking for that Federer power and spin but on a tighter budget, I think I have the solution for you.

You might have switched to a multifilament due to arm issues. It solved the arm issue but created another: it doesn’t spin the ball. A full bed of Wilson NXT may be super comfortable but the strings fray and they lock up. Until now…

I’m the type of person who thinks there is a solution for everything if you just search hard enough. And I think I’ve found it! This hybrid has just as much comfort as your Wilson NXT but can finally put some shape on the ball. I’ve selected a 16g crisp & powerful multifilament in the mains that is made by the same company that makes Wilson NXT but doesn’t include the same Wilson markup. Then in the cross string I use one of the softest polyester strings I’ve played with that keeps tension extremely well, Isospeed Cream. Cream is smooth slick and soft allowing the multifilament main strings to impart spin with ease.  Some people feel that multifilaments are outdated but hopefully this hybrid will restore your faith in the old tech.

  • 60lbs max tension
  • maintains tension extremely well
  • if you’re a heavy hitter, the multifilament may not last long due to all the spin it puts on the ball.
  • yes, I know it doesn’t look EXACTLY like Federer’s strings but we can use our imagination, can’t we?
